The home side of the story

The world widened.
Her life mattered here.

Some of Mary’s children built lives in Scotland and America. The surviving records bring us back to her in Tullynascreen: a widow, a farmer, a woman who spoke Irish and English.

But her story does not begin with a departure.
It begins with Mary Conlon, before the children, before widowhood—with a marriage.

Killenummery parish, County Leitrim · Reported 25 November 1861

Mary before “mother”

A faint line begins a household.

Before later records called her a widow and farmer, Mary appears under her own family name: Mary Conlon. A faint line in the Killenummery parish register is reported to record her marriage to Michael McPadden on 25 November 1861.

The witnesses were reported as John and Bridget Conlan. Their names may bring us closer to Mary’s own family, but the register does not state their relationship to her. Her parents, exact birth and childhood household remain unresolved.

Here Mary is not yet the widow in the later census or the mother watching children leave. She is a bride whose earlier life we are still trying to recover.

Strong reported reading tied to the correct primary pageThe target line still needs an independent high-resolution rereading. The page does not establish Mary’s parents, age, courtship, feelings or the witnesses’ relationship to her.
