# Stern-view motion study

Research checked 24 September 2026. This is a period-inspired AI illustration, not an authenticated view from the Teutonic or a depiction of James in a documented position aboard her.

## Evidence and limits

- [Titanic Belfast, Teutonic Fact File](https://www.titanicbelfast.com/fr/history-of-titanic/ship-fact-files/teutonic-fact-file/) records an elliptical stern, steel framework, and twin screws. This supports general ship context, not the invented railing materials, proportions or passenger viewpoint.
- [South Street Seaport Museum, Millions exhibition](https://southstreetseaportmuseum.org/millions_past/) identifies *On Deck, Steamer Teutonic, 1891*, Strohmeyer & Wyman, collection 2005.013.0003. This is a promising lead for further deck research; no exact stern arrangement is asserted from the catalogue entry.
- [Royal Museums Greenwich, G2541](https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-999660) describes a circa-1890 starboard near-beam photograph from just aft of broadside. It is not a passenger's aft-facing view.
- [Johnston photograph, Library of Congress digital ID det.4a15922, Commons reproduction](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Teutonic1890-1900.jpg) provides a historical external view. It does not verify the specific foreground rail in this scene.

This bounded search did not establish an exact aft-facing deck view for 1904. That is a research gap, not a claim that no such evidence exists. No historical photographs from these sources are reproduced in the new illustration; sources are linked for context and future research.

## Editorial construction

The two layers are a wake/ocean background and a separate transparent period-inspired railing. The foreground rail remains still. The sea texture uses a perspective flow: foreground foam travels away from the stern and converges toward the horizon, while distant surface detail moves much less. Two overlapping texture phases replenish the image without a hard loop reset. Small ripples are secondary to this directional flow. Clouds have their own slower, one-way drift and overhead-to-horizon movement; neither the camera nor the horizon rocks. The existing coast remains broad and lowers into haze as the reader scrolls. Scrolling also advances the sea and sky so the elements share a departure, while ambient motion continues when the reader pauses. No screen position, duration, apparent wake shape or cloud condition is a historical or physical measurement.

This refinement reuses the existing artwork; no additional image generation or new historical claims are involved. It remains a layered animated illustration, not filmed or simulated ocean footage. Turning motion off freezes the animated surface and shoreline at their current position, rather than resetting the composition. Reduced-motion preferences use the still treatment. Animation is suspended when the scene leaves view or its tab is hidden.

Do not infer James's passenger class, deck access, thoughts, exact line of sight or the weather from this illustration. Do not relabel the generic rail as an exact Teutonic reconstruction without adequate evidence.

The historic manifest evidence elsewhere in the chapter remains unchanged. Motion can be switched off; reduced-motion and graphics-unavailable visitors receive a still treatment. This is an animated illustration, not video footage.
