# America, at last — cinematic arrival sources

24 September 2026. The first pass added the harbor and representative inspection sequence to A Ticket to Bridgeport, moment 13. The next revision strengthens the approach and adds a [period-map railway exploration](bridgeport-railway-research.md). No personal meeting in Bridgeport is staged.

## Where evidence ends and interpretation begins

The Teutonic's arrival on 20 October 1904, James's $10, Bridgeport destination and sister Mrs James Kelly at 11 Warren Court are supported by his completed manifest. See [arrival research and original-record links](new-york-arrival-research.md) and the [preserved full page](teutonic-manifest-1904.jpg).

James's passenger class, inspection location, individual questions, admission time, and onward itinerary remain unresolved. The Ellis Island sequence is representative institutional history, explicitly introduced before entering it. There is no asserted liner landing on Ellis Island, invented admission document, detention, examination result, conversation, same-day rail connection or reunion.

The emotional language invites a reader to consider the contrast between rural Leitrim and a large harbor. It does not claim access to James's memories. The camera movement is editorial framing, not a geographic track or an elapsed-time simulation.

## Harbor illustration

Current image: [period deck-corner illustration](harbor-1904-deck-corner.png), 1672 by 941, edited with the built-in OpenAI image-generation tool from the original panorama. [Exact edit prompt](harbor-1904-deck-corner-prompt.txt). The clearer timber deck and rail are representative of a period ship, not a verified Teutonic deck reconstruction.

The new motion composites the ship foreground in a fixed position, animates clear water toward the viewer, drifts the upper clouds, and enlarges the land/Liberty around the horizon by up to 1.78 times. The next refinement extends cloud motion over more of the sky and animates the existing small steamer’s painted smoke plume with a local rising ripple. The statue, skyline, funnel, hull and rail remain outside these distortion regions. These are texture effects on the illustration, not new archival material. This is an editorial illusion of approach, not an exact harbor track, weather record, historical speed or simulation of passing Liberty. Motion pauses when requested, offscreen or when the tab is hidden. Reduced-motion and unavailable-WebGL fallbacks retain the still image.

The onward sequence now includes [town photographs and a sourced Bridgeport-to-Warren-Court map transition](arrival-city-images-and-map.md). The 1913 map is later context, not James’s verified 1904 walk.

- [Local illustration](harbor-1904-cinematic.png), 1672 × 941, generated with OpenAI image generation, 24 September 2026.
- [Generation and corrective-edit prompts](harbor-1904-prompt.txt).
- An interpretive harbor panorama with a period deck rail, Liberty, small steam/sail vessels and a subdued distant city. Not an archival photograph, measured skyline, verified shipboard view, Teutonic deck reconstruction, weather record or exact route.
- The corrective pass removed conspicuous later skyline towers and reduced the statue's scale. Architectural details and composition remain illustrative rather than surveyed.
- The original version used a limited scroll-linked change of framing. The revision adds texture motion as described above. Neither pins a course toward Ellis Island.
- [NPS Statue of Liberty facts](https://home.nps.gov/stli/learn/statue-of-liberty-facts.htm) supplies the landmark's historical setting.

## Preserved archival images

Both originals are stored unchanged so that source-site availability does not control the experience. The presentation adds a subtle sepia display treatment and crossfade, not retouching. Both LOC catalogue rights advisories say “No known restrictions on publication.” That is the catalogue's advisory, not a new guarantee of rights in every jurisdiction.

- [Local original](ellis-waterfront-1905.jpg), 1280 × 1028.
- The catalogue describes a view across water with paddle steamers at the dock, and cautions that its description includes old unverified caption-card data. The image visibly carries a 1905 copyright inscription. It is not a photograph of October 1904 or James's transfer.

- Do not narrow its date to 1904. It shows the early plaster vault, not the Guastavino tile ceiling installed following 1916 damage. [NPS architectural history](https://www.nps.gov/places/000/ellis-architectural-highlights.htm).

## Context behind the scenes

- [NPS FAQ](https://www.nps.gov/elis/faqs.htm): passenger-class distinction between Ellis Island and aboard-ship inspection. This supports the unresolved-path warning, not an inference about James's class from his money or occupation.
- [Statue of Liberty–Ellis Island Foundation history](https://www.ellisisland.org/ellis-island/overview-history/): transfer of steerage passengers to ferries or barges for Ellis Island. The story intentionally avoids a liner docking at the island.
- [NPS medical inspection](https://www.nps.gov/places/000/historic-medical-inspection-2nd-floor.htm): observation on the stairs and entering the Registry Room. No particular medical procedure is assigned to James.
- [NPS immigrant inspector](https://www.nps.gov/elis/learn/historyculture/people_immigrant_inspector.htm): comparison of answers with passenger lists at the inspector's desk.
- [NPS legal inspection](https://www.nps.gov/places/000/historic-legal-inspection-2nd-floor.htm): scrutiny of ability to support oneself and family contacts.

## Interaction boundaries

Normal scrolling remains in the visitor's control. Harbor framing can be paused; reduced-motion preferences remove the zoom and archival crossfade. Narrow and short screens use simpler static layouts, without hiding the story. The original passenger record remains accessible through the existing evidence reader and return-position behavior.
