# Bridgeport newspaper and map image sources

Reviewed 3 October 2026. These source links identify the historical pages behind five preserved website images. The images are unchanged. Page comparisons establish the source, not every interpretation made about it.

## Newspaper pages

Credit: The Bridgeport Evening Farmer, via Library of Congress, Chronicling America; digitization contributed by Connecticut State Library. The [collection rights statement](https://www.loc.gov/collections/chronicling-america/about-this-collection/rights-and-access/) describes US newspapers published more than 95 years ago as public domain in their entirety. This is the basis for the current website, download and existing-image treatment assessment, not a new project license or worldwide warranty.

| Preserved image | Issue and original page | Treatment and limits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `william-mcniff-obituary-1910.jpg` | [21 February 1910, page 4](https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn84022472/1910-02-21/ed-1/?sp=4) | Selected obituary detail. William's death was reported as the previous evening, 20 February. The neighboring obituaries are not part of his entry. |
| `michael-mcpadden-license-1910.jpg` | [1 March 1910, page 6](https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn84022472/1910-03-01/ed-1/?sp=6) | Selected notice detail. Application dated 28 February; publication dated 1 March. This is an application to transfer license 225, not proof that a transfer was completed or that property changed hands. Earlier working links to page 9 were incorrect. |
| `james-kelly-obituary-1915.png` | [18 June 1915, page 2](https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn84022472/1915-06-18/ed-1/?sp=2) | Full newspaper page rendered as PNG; the obituary is near the bottom. The separate death notice gives a different place of death from the obituary; retain that discrepancy. |
| `james-kelly-probate-1915.png` | [22 July 1915, page 10](https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn84022472/1915-07-22/ed-1/?sp=10) | Full newspaper page rendered as PNG. The James Kelly notice names Catherine Kelly as administratrix and is dated 18 June 1915. It is not the complete probate file, estate inventory or proof of ownership of a house. |

The two 1915 full-page images were visually compared with newly retrieved Library of Congress images. The 1910 pages were checked against repository page layouts and retained research images; no claim of byte-identical freshly downloaded PDFs is made. Historical spelling, neighboring notices and advertisements remain part of the original pages.

## The Howard Avenue and Railroad Avenue corner

`mcniff-corner-sanborn-1913.jpg` is a rotated detail of sheet 74, [Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Bridgeport, Connecticut, 1913, volume 1](https://www.loc.gov/item/sanborn01103_005/). The complete sheet remains available from the [Library of Congress image service](https://tile.loc.gov/image-services/iiif/service:gmd:gmd378m:g3784m:g3784bm:g3784bm_g01103191301:01103_01_1913-0074/full/1000,/0/default.jpg). The buildings and street labels in the preserved detail were compared with that sheet; the displayed crop is not a new survey.

Credit: Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division, Sanborn Maps Collection. The [collection rights statement](https://www.loc.gov/collections/sanborn-maps/about-this-collection/rights-and-access/) identifies the online collection as public domain and free to use and reuse. Retain sheet, date, source and crop description when sharing.

This is a **1913** map, not a photograph or a map of James's 1904 arrival. Its corner numbering must not silently replace the 1230 Railroad Avenue address in the 1910 notice. It does not establish current ownership, a present parcel boundary or permission to enter property.

## Publication scope

This is project-authored source guidance. Its text review covers this text only, not the linked images; the five image assessments are recorded separately in the [current per-file decisions](../downloads/founding-edition-asset-register.json). Linked image and commercial-book assessments remain separate. Preserve source credits, dates and interpretation limits with reuse.

## Original writing license

Original project-authored writing in this note is licensed under CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), to the extent the project controls the rights. Credit Ed McPadden / The McPadden Project, link to this original note and the license, and indicate changes. Quoted third-party passages, linked media and source datasets or route geometry retain their own terms and are not included. Publication assessments are not additional restrictions on licensed writing; retaining evidence limits is research good practice.
